The British Inherited Cardiac Conditions Society (BICCS) invites submissions for its 2026 Young Investigator Award (YIA), celebrating excellence in research among early-career investigators pursuing a career in cardiovascular clinical medicine or research.

Supported by Rare Disease Research UK (RDR-UK), the award offers a £250 prize and the opportunity to present your work to experts in the field.

Who can apply?

The award is open to early-career researchers without substantive academic appointments, including healthcare professionals in training and researchers who have not yet obtained a PhD or are within three years of completing their PhD (or equivalent doctoral research). There is no age limit, and applications are welcomed from all backgrounds, including healthcare professionals and scientists undertaking research relevant to inherited cardiovascular conditions.

What do I need to submit?

Applicants must submit a brief communication as a single Word document, including:

  • An abstract with a title (maximum 250 characters) and text (maximum 3,000 characters).

  • A main body comprising Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and Figure Legends (maximum 1,000 words).

  • Up to five tables and/or figures and a maximum of 15 references.

  • A statement of contribution outlining the applicant’s role in the work and naming any collaborators.

Previously published work may be included, provided it has not been published in full paper form in its entirety by the submission deadline. Work submitted previously or simultaneously as a clinical or basic science abstract is also eligible, provided the YIA submission offers a more detailed description.

Please note: YIA submissions are separate from the standard poster abstract process. Applicants wishing to submit work for both must complete both submission processes separately. Each candidate may make only one YIA submission.

What happens next?

Up to three finalists will be invited to deliver a 10-minute oral presentation, followed by five minutes of questions from the judging panel, during the YIA session on Thursday 10 December 2026. The winner will be selected by the judges and awarded £250.

Key deadline

Submit your application by Saturday 31 October 2026.

Email your completed Word document to enquiries@biccs.org.uk.
