Dr Lara Curran

Cardiology Specialist Registrar (London)

Dr Lara Curran is a cardiology specialist registrar at Barts Heart Centre (North Central and East London deanery) and a postdoctoral clinical research fellow based between the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Brompton Hospital and the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences. She holds a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Clinical Early Career Research Fellowship through the Chain-Florey Clinician Scientist Programme at Imperial College London.

Lara graduated with distinction from UCL Medical School in 2013. In 2017–18 she was a visiting research fellow at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she developed machine-learning models to improve prenatal detection of structural heart disease. In 2021 she was awarded a BHF/Wellcome 4i doctoral fellowship to explore novel machine-learning approaches to characterising disease heterogeneity in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), supervised by Professors Sanjay Prasad, Declan O'Regan and James Ware. She was awarded her PhD by Imperial in 2026.

Her current research focuses on precision phenotyping of HCM, integrating advanced cardiac imaging, genetics and machine learning to understand why the disease course varies between patients and to improve individual risk prediction. She is a researcher in the BHF-funded CureHeart programme and serves on the Early Career Committee of the American Heart Association's Council on Genomic and Precision Medicine.
